Is Your Name 'Marquis'?
This site is for anyone with ‘Marquis’ as a surname whose family origins go back to Scotland, especially Argyll. Marquis (MacMarquis before 1800), ‘son of Mark’, origins that seem to have lain in the lands of the MacDonalds, and the development of a close long-term relationship (particularly, with the MacDonalds of Largie) that lasted until the end of the eighteenth century.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, they were a significant bardic family with substantial landholdings in Southern Kintyre. For three centuries male members of the MacMarquis family and their tenants would have fought in endless clan conflicts, civil wars, and Jacobite Rebellions alongside their Largie patrons.
